Laura Mercier Silk Creme Foundation | My Thoughts

Images courtesy of Live Laugh Lipstick (thank you!)
This little tube is no stranger to the blogosphere, I think I've probably seen every single blogger write about this or at least mention it on some sort of social media platform. I'm not usually one to follow a hyped up product but I was running low on my latest foundation and searched through my favourite bloggers sites, reading review after review to get a good impression on this foundation, making sure I looked at various skin types to get a good idea if it would suit me - oily, spotty and scarred. The general consensus was YES, this foundation is incredible.

Needless to say I was super excited when it arrived the next day. Stupidly beautiful, simplistic packaging - my favourite, I was smitten as soon as I opened the envelope. I ran home, (well I didn't run home at all, I drove, sensibly) took off my makeup from the day and reapplied with Laura Mercier Silk Creme Foundation (in shade Cream Ivory). The smell was lovely, almost powdery with a hint of vanilla.
But I looked in the mirror and just stared for a minute. I started off with quite a small amount, but we all know that I'm partial to quite full coverage, so I buffed in a fair bit more to see how well it built up. I don't know what it was but it just didn't sit well on my skin at all, it was instantly sloppy and didn't seem to blend nicely like many bloggers had promised. I figured it was probably down to already having had a full face of makeup that day and hadn't given it time to breathe etc.
The next morning, albeit more apprehensively than the night before I did my usual routine and pulled out the foundation to try again. The same thing happened, every time I tried to blend it just made lines, even when I used the teeniest amount (and yes I shook the bottle well before use). Regardless I blended as best I could and set with powder, determined to wear it for a full day considering I'd just spent £33 on it.
After about an hour of wear I went to the bathroom, sad to see that the sloppiness had got worse and that the foundation was clinging to any blemishes or dry patches, highlighting them like little halos. It also made my skin look quite dull and lackluster but I persisted a few more times but after 3/4 wears I'd had enough and decided that it was best we ended our relationship.

I managed to sell it on to someone who loves it dearly, which makes me happy. But it certainly didn't tick the foundation holy grail box for me. Pretty packaging? Yes. Medium-Full Coverage? Yes. Suitable for my skin? Nope. I'm sure this is a wonderful foundation for most, but sadly we just didn't get along. If you, like me, have troubles finding a suitable foundation and were thinking of trying this one I would perhaps suggest visiting your local counter first and picking up a sample.

I know there are so many of you who love it, but are there any who feel similar to me? I'd love to know I'm not the only one!!!

(PS a big thank you to Georgina for letting me use her photo's!! I sold this before I'd even had a chance to snap it, so really appreciate her generosity :) bloomin lovely piccies too lady!)

Such a shame it didn't work for you lovely. I found it ok but it's not my holy grail foundation by any means.
Thanks for the honest review x

Aww no I'm so sad it didn't work for you! It's one of my favourite high end foundations! :( crazy how everyone's skin is different & different brands/foundations work well for some and not for others.. Leaves me mind blown! Xxxx

I have suchhh a hard time finding foundations too! I use the Laura Mercier tinted moisturiser and it works really great for me, but anything heavier than a tinted moisturiser tends to do what this did for you too. So if you find something good let me know!!

I've usually only heard rave reviews of the Laura Mercier products so it was interesting to for once see something different - some products just don't work out :o). Xx

Oh no what a shame it didn't work for you! This kinda takes the pressure off me to try it though, I'll just stick with my faithful Double Wear. Just picked up my winter shade, I'm that committed.

I bought this foundation a few months ago and it breaks me out so badly! I was in denial at first (mainly because of the price), but I haven't used it for a little while now and my skin has cleared right up. It's such a shame because I did like the coverage. The holy grail foundation search goes on...!

This is such a shame for you, mainly because of the price of the foundation, at least you were able to sell it and get some of your money back :)

I personally really like this foundation, it's probably the best one I've found but I can see why some people wouldn't like it as at first I had a similar problem to you in that it clung to a few dry patches on me. Luckily I had a sample at the time so I did hold off buying it for a while but once my skin had improved I tried it again and really saw why it was hyped up as much as it was.

Creamy ivory is my shade too. Hope you find something better for you, I think I saw that you were using Illamasqua Skin Base in a recent video, I want to try that next :)

What a shame :( Nothing worse than buying a high end makeup product and being disappointed.

I adore Silk Creme and it makes my face look flawless. It's weird that everyone's skin is so different.

I bought the tinted moisturiser and was very dissapointed. It's hard to blend and only works well if I use my YSL top secrets primer. Will stick to Chanel..

Oh no that's so disappointing :(
I bought this and quite like it but I have the wrong shade and felt like it oxidised a bit. Need to sell mine ha!

i had the same problem! I got a sample of it though and it clinged onto all my dry patches, i looked so bad! gladI'm not the only one. xx

Oh no what a shame! This is my absolute favourite foundation however it did take me a while finding a technique that didn't leave it streaky on my face. I now have to buff it in with my Real Techniques brush then go over with a duo fibre. It's a hard work foundation for sure! Not everything will suit everybody though so really refreshing to hear an honest opinion, good for you x

I bought this foundation and had a similar problem, I found this foundation never seemed to buff into the skin and made my skin look so greasey. Luckily I managed to sell it on ebay. My HG foundation is Nars Sheer Glow! x

I bought this foundation and had a similar problem, I found it never seemed to buff into the skin and made my face look so greasey! (And I have normal skin). My HG foundation is Nars Sheer Glow. X

I've been using the Laura Mercier tinted moisturiser and at first when I had a sample, it just wouldn't sit nice on my skin. I love the coverage of it so I tried it again (they gave me a complete different colour) and this time I only used my Ren serum and nothing else and it went on lovely, and better yet stayed on all day which normally never happens for me. It may be like that for you, some products just don't work well together xx

I have been using Lancome Teint Miracle foundation and I completely love it! This is such a shame for you, mainly because of the price of the foundation, I'm glad at least you were able to sell it and get some of your money back. Have a nice Friday my dear <3

This was very helpful! Thanks!

This is really Interesting as you here such great things about it all the time. I have quite combo skin and prone to breakouts so probably wouldn't be great for me.

they need to do an oil free product. this would slide off my oily skin ><"

Gemma Talbot said...

I love this foundation but definitely need to get a darker shade as it's a bit pale for me now x

Charlotte Hosking said...

The exact same thing happens to me. I have two shades, I've copied exactly what the Laura Mercier MUA did and as soon as I try, it clings to dry patches (I don't even have that many but it somehow finds them!). I think I'm about ready to give up on it!

Gemma said...

You're not alone! I bought it after reading so many rave reviews, and when it came I was so gutted as it didn't apply nicely and felt like it suffocated my pores! I sold mine through Twitter luckily but I really wanted to love it :( xx

Kayti Clayton said...

This probably sounds really weird but the same thing happened to me when I first purchased it. The shade I bought was also a bit too dark so the next day I went back, returned it and decided I'd give it one more go in a different shade and the consistency and blendability was COMPLETELY different. It was like the whole formula changed from shade to shade. I don't know if maybe they just have random bad tubes but I do notice that every time I repurchase this, it's slightly different.

tillylion said...

Just used up my tube of this and purchased NARS sheer matte foundation instead and slightly regretting it! X

I haven't tried this but I really want to. Whenever people say a foundation clings to their dry patches I usually don't have that reaction. My skin isn't dry in the slightest so I guess that's the reason why. At least you were able to sell it :)

This has been on my 'wish list' for sometime. Like some comment above, I've only ever read rave reviews on this, so it's nice to read a contrasting review. Plus, my have similar skin tones, so I'll be putting it on my maybe list..

I get the same issue sometimes with this foundation. I find it can sit really heavy on patches etc. But on other days sits like a dream.

Inga said...

That Silk Creme Foundation looks great - I want it! Will definitely go on my holiday wish list!

Sophie Louise said...

Really surprised you didn't enjoy this. I have some pigmentation on my skin from sun damage so a full coverage is a must and this foundation is perfect, although sometimes a little heavy.

I had the same problem with it at first. It seems that the first week of me wearing it, I was absolutely disappointed. It would look streaky and move around weirdly when I would blend it, as well as cling to my dry patches. But afterwards, I really started to love it. I find that perhaps shaking the bottle up may be one thing that makes a difference. I think I've heard that the foundation can somehow separate? I've also considered maybe applying it with a sponge, such as a beauty blender, instead of a brush may leave a better finish. Currently, I'm using the Real Techniques Expert Face Brush, and it seems to do fine. And as for the dry patches, I've come to the conclusion that heavy moisturizing and exfoliating have become daily regimens of mine. I must do this before putting on any foundation. It really is a lovely foundation though, if you are willing to put in the time and effort for preparation and application. I enjoyed reading your review, and love your blog!
